I was just waking up from a nap on the sofa when I heard my mother say my name. She was staring at me from the kitchen table, along with my uncle and my grandmother’s aide, Daphne.

“Daphne needs to take the night off and we want you to stay with Grandma that weekend,” my mom said.

“Okay,” I said, rubbing my eyes.

“And then I’m having foot surgery, so you’ll come over to my place and take care of me.”

Hold on a minute. I looked over and everyone was staring at me, except for Grandma, who had that faraway look on her face again, regarding something through the terrace door.

“When is this?”

“The week after next—the day after you take care of Grandma.”

“I have to check my calendar,” I said, stalling. “I might have class that night.”

“Why’d you offer to help, then?” my mother said, her tone suddenly harsh. Whenever I didn’t agree with her right away, she always sounded angry.

“I need to check my calendar and then I’ll let you know.” I sat up and went to the bathroom—the easiest way to make an exit.
